Working from home? Feeling alone? Plymouth, MA Copywriter launches My Home Office Hacks

Yes, working from home has many benefits—commute, wardrobe, optional bathing, etc. You do tend to feel like you’re missing out on things. Best coffee? Latest productivity app? Where to shop for a new (fill in the blank). This used to be the kind of info you would get in the lunchroom at work or grabbing a coffee. My Home Office Hacks, a new Substack newsletter by Joe D’Eramo of Plymouth, MA, will attempt to bridge that gap.

“There are plenty of folks who work from home now. Whether it’s running a business, contractor/freelancer or staff of a company. There are so many of doing this, why not help each other out by sharing what’s working, what’s not. Or what do I do from losing it at my keyboard?” said D’Eramo, who has been working remotely since 2002 as the owner of HiRoad Communications. “My Home Office Hacks is virtual water cooler where we share ideas about the remote working experience.”

Adds D’Eramo, “Input and ideas from readers about what’s working for them are always welcome.”

My Home Office Hacks officially launched in May 2021 as a monthly newsletter. D’Eramo upgraded My Home Office Hacks to a weekly newsletter in October. The newsletter is published on Monday mornings.

In addition to helpful home office tips, My HOH, as D’Eramo affectionately refers to the publication, features the author’s dry sense of humor featured in some of his previous writing efforts—mostly notably his self-published book, Recipes for the Roommate-Impaired.

Titles of some of the first editions of My Home Office Hacks include: Thank you, Chuck Norris; Working from Home and the Second Best Line from Con Air; I Hate When People Eat on Zoom Calls; and Could You Do That in a Normal Office.

“A lot of people treated working at home as sort of a snow day at first. It is definitely not as easy as you might think,” said D’Eramo. “In a lot of ways, it’s more difficult as bosses still expect you to produce. And if you own your own business, you know you have to put the work in. My HOH tries to fill a bit of the void left by not being in an office.”

Summer 2019’s second most talked about Reboot – Joe D’Eramo releases 1993 title Recipes for the Roommate-Impaired as Kindle

Summer 2019’s second most talked about Reboot – Joe D’Eramo releases 1993 title Recipes for the Roommate-Impaired as Kindle

photo of the cover of Recipes for the Roommate-Impaired by Joe D'Eramo and John "Walter" ReedIn 1993, Millis native Joe D’Eramo co-wrote and self-published Recipes for the Roommate-Impaired: A Comical Look at Eating and Living with People as a paperback. In the spirit of the reboot of Beverly Hills 90210, D’Eramo decided to put it out as a Kindle book.

Why?

“Well, even after all this time, the recipes are damn good—the meatloaf, mac and cheese and tuna noodle casserole are to die for; best BBQ recipe out there, too. Second, and more importantly, I got tired of looking up the pages in the paperback, placing it down on the counter, repeat…. you get the idea. So, I went for it and it’s now available as a Kindle on Amazon,” said D’Eramo, a freelance copywriter and marketing and PR consultant.

The initial paperback, co-written with D’Eramo’s former roommate, Chef John “Walter” Reed, sold at local bookstores in the Boston area. The new Kindle title will sell strictly online.

“The world, just like John and I, has changed dramatically since we put out the book way back when,” said D’Eramo. “We’re both married with children and John has gone on to do some great things with his culinary consulting practice in the greater Chicago area.”

The new Kindle version include updated and editor’s notes where things get a little uncomfortable.

“People’s sense of humor is not quite the same as 1993 and we needed to edit things a bit for today’s reader,” said D’Eramo.

Recipes for the Roommate-Impaired teaches readers how to: Create very edible meals on a limited budget with minimal supplies; improvise for those times when your roommie has gone on a binge; impress overnight (ahem) guests with your other talent; and more. Along the way, Recipes for the Roommate-Impaired lampoons the many oddities and consistencies that make the roommate experience so darn interesting. This includes such sections as: What to Make While Watching the Brady Bunch; What You Should Do With Your Chicken; Things That Grow in Your Bathroom That You Can Eat; For Better or (Liver)wurst; and more. It’s a regular smorgasbord of entertainment and information packed into the most unlikely of places: a cookbook.

The reboot version of Recipes for the Roommate-Impaired is sold on Amazon at a special introductory price of $2.99.

“We’re not going to keep it at that price for long,” said D’Eramo. “But for $2.99 you can get the world’s best meatloaf recipe, put it on your smartphone or tablet, and never had to dog ear a page.”

What made ‘blended’ splendid? “Stepfather of the Year” contest announced.

DATELINE: PLYMOUTH, MA…

25 Ways to go from Stepfather to StepDad author Joe D’Eramo recently announced plans for a “Stepfather of the Year” award to recognize the important role stepdads play in blended families.

In nominating a Stepfather of the Year, D’Eramo is soliciting anecdotes from members of blended families—families with children from previous marriages/relationships. The person submitting the most touching story about that transcendent moment when their blended family became splendid will win dinner for two at Olive Garden.

“Being a stepfather can be a tough gig. As much as the kids might have been excited about Mom getting remarried, living with another adult in the house is an adjustment,” said D’Eramo, stepfather to two. “But there are these events in our lives, good or bad, where we cross that line and become a family. That’s what I want to hear from other blended families as they nominate their stepdads.”

Interested blended family members can enter their stepdad by telling their story on the 25 Ways to go from Stepfather to StepDad Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/mystepdad (you have to like the page first). If you are not on Facebook, you can submit your story in 250 words or less to joe.deramo@facebook.com. Photos are welcome. A winner of a $50 gift certificate to Olive Garden will be selected on June 18 (the Monday after Father’s Day). U.S. residents from all 50 states are welcome. You must submit a valid name and e-mail address to be considered.

“Stepfathers play an important part in the lives of their stepchildren. Yet it can be difficult for children to celebrate Father’s Day with their stepfather for any number of reasons—visitation schedules that require the children to be with the biological father on Father’s Day; guilt over celebrating Father’s Day with someone who is not their biological father,” said D’Eramo. “ “The reason behind this contest is so that I can create a special way to honor these men who do so much for their families.”

According to the website The Bonded Family, almost 2,100 blended families form in the United States every day. Another site, Smart Stepfamilies, states that more than 29 million parents (13 percent) are also stepparents to other children.

A Plymouth, Mass.-resident and step-parent of two, Joe D’Eramo recently published a new e-book, 25 Ways to go from Stepfather to StepDad as a way to offer helpful suggestions for soon-to-be or newly married men who are becoming husbands and fathers for the first time.

25 Ways to go from Stepfather to StepDad sells for $8.95 on Amazon as a Kindle book (Kindle also offers a free app that enables customers to read e-books on their PC) and as an e-book on D’Eramo’s website, www.hiroadcommunications.com. You can read more about the book and tips for stepfathers on the 25 Ways to go from Stepfather to StepDad Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/mystepdad.
